Crafting Magical Family Vacations with Erika Post

Interview by Heather Anderson

Erika Post, a Disney travel specialist and family vacation planner, is passionate about helping families create seamless, unforgettable experiences. From Disney parks to cruises and all-inclusive resorts, Erika's attention to detail ensures every trip is tailored to each family’s unique needs. In this interview, Erika shares her expert tips, the behind-the-scenes magic of Disney travel planning, and how she turns dream vacations into reality—even for last-minute getaways.

Could you share with us the different types of travel experiences you specialize in planning? I understand there are three main areas you focus on.

I primarily focus on everything within the Disney theme park realm, major cruise lines, and all-inclusive resorts. When it comes to Disney, that includes Disneyland, Disney World, Disney Cruise Line, and Aulani in Hawaii. There's also Adventures by Disney, which is lesser-known but offers fully curated adventures around the world with Disney’s signature service. I also do non-Disney vacations, like Royal Caribbean cruises or all-inclusives in places like Mexico and the Bahamas.

That’s fascinating. I didn’t realize Disney had something like Adventures by Disney—it seems like a wonderful way for families to explore beyond the parks. Could you share more about how that works?

Sure! Adventures by Disney offers fully inclusive tours around the world. For example, if you want to visit Europe, you just fly yourself to the starting point, and they handle everything from there—meals, hotels, and private tours of iconic sites like the Sistine Chapel. It’s Disney-level service without being a typical Disney park experience.

It really sounds like a dream vacation—getting that Disney quality but in some incredible destinations. Shifting gears a bit, a lot of people are curious about the cost of travel planning services. You operate without charging fees to your clients, which is pretty unique. How does that work, and why did you choose that approach?

Yes, that’s right! I don’t charge extra fees because I get paid a commission directly from Disney or the cruise line, or all-inclusive resort. Whether you book through me or directly with Disney, the price is the same. The commission is built into the price, and Disney pays me for helping you. So, it doesn’t cost you anything extra, and I handle all the planning and support for you!

That makes so much sense. I think a lot of people assume using an agent would cost more, but really, it’s a win-win for families to have someone like you handle all the details—especially when it comes to those special deals.

Exactly, and the best part is that if a discount or special deal pops up after you book, I’ll automatically adjust your reservation and apply the discount for you. So, you might actually save more by booking through me!

I grew up going to Disneyland with my family, and it created some of my best childhood memories. I’ve been to Disney over 30 times, and I always loved the magic of it.

That’s a real bonus! Let’s go back to your personal story. You mentioned that Disney has always been a big part of your life—what sparked your passion for Disney and led you to become a Disney travel agent?

I grew up going to Disneyland with my family, and it created some of my best childhood memories. I’ve been to Disney over 30 times, and I always loved the magic of it. I’m also a natural planner, so when the pandemic hit and I had my second baby, I decided to make a career change. I wanted to be home more, and helping families create those magical memories just felt like the right thing to do. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made!

I love that! Turning something you’re passionate about into a career is something so many people aspire to do. And in your case, you’re helping families create lifelong memories, which is such a meaningful aspect of your work.

Yes, it’s been so rewarding. I don’t feel like I’m working because I genuinely love what I do!

That’s the ideal situation—when your work doesn’t even feel like work. Now, planning a Disney trip can be a huge task, especially for larger groups. How do you customize the experience to fit different family sizes and needs, from small groups to large family vacations?

Because I’ve traveled with all kinds of family groups—immediate family, extended family, and everything in between—I know how to make things work for each group. I consider things like budgets, age ranges, and logistics. For example, if you have little kids, I won’t recommend a hotel far from the park. If you have grandparents with mobility issues, I’ll make sure you’re staying close enough that getting around isn’t a hassle. It’s all about matching the right experience to the family’s needs.

That’s such a thoughtful approach. You really have that insider perspective most people wouldn’t even think of—like knowing which hotels work best for strollers or those needing mobility assistance. I know you also have a lot of experience helping families with special needs. How do you make sure those families have a smooth Disney experience?

I have a lot of personal and professional experience with this, especially through Disney’s Disability Access Service (DAS). I guide families through applying for DAS and explain what accommodations they can request, like sensory-friendly spaces or mobility assistance. I also have recommendations for quiet spots in the parks where families can take a break.

That’s fantastic information. I’ll be honest—I’ve avoided Disney in the past because of the thought of long lines with kids, but this changes the picture completely. Having that flexibility really makes a difference!

Exactly! It’s all about making the experience manageable for families who need a little extra support. You can still enjoy the magic without feeling overwhelmed.

You also specialize in last-minute plans, which can be challenging, especially for big groups. What’s your approach to planning those spur-of-the-moment getaways?

I’ve done last-minute trips where people call me the day before they want to leave! Because I stay up-to-date on everything—hotel availability, special deals, etc.—I can book a trip in under 10 minutes sometimes. I know which hotels are available, and I can make quick decisions to get everything booked fast.

That’s really impressive. I love that last-minute trips are still an option! And on the subject of planning—Disney can be a big investment. What advice do you have for families trying to stay within a budget?

Disney can be expensive, but there are lots of ways to save. You can bring your own food into the park, which saves a lot. I always tell clients to bring water bottles and use the free water stations. Also, sharing meals can save a lot—portions at Disney are usually huge! Another tip is to buy souvenirs ahead of time. I’ll pick up Disney plushies or shirts at Target before we go and surprise my kids with them during the trip. It’s the same magic without the park prices.

That’s a great tip! It’s such a clever way to keep the excitement without spending too much. For families who might not be planning a Disney trip, how do you handle non-Disney vacation experiences?

I also plan non-Disney vacations, like cruises or all-inclusive resorts. Cruises are great for families because they offer built-in childcare with fun kids clubs, so parents can get a little downtime. All-inclusives are also a great option, especially for multi-generational families, because everyone can do their own thing but still come together for meals and activities.

It’s so good to know you cover all these options. Whether it’s Disney or something completely different, families are in good hands with you.

Exactly! I love helping families create the perfect vacation, no matter what their destination is.

One last question—how do you stay on top of all the latest updates in the travel world to provide the best advice for your clients?

I stay up-to-date by attending webinars, reading newsletters, and participating in trainings from vendors like Disney and cruise lines. I also work closely with my team, so if one of us misses a training, we make sure to share notes and updates. We’re always on top of the latest information so our clients get the best possible experience.
