We’re proud to partner with Soko, a startup aiming to revolutionize the farm-to-table industry with innovative tech. With their app-based solutions, communities will become better connected to farmers markets and their vendors, and farmers markets will become more convenient and accessible.
We love their focus on food justice, sustainability, and their overarching mission to encourage communities to shop small and local.
Their app is called Soko, the Farmers Market App, and with it, you can discover farmers markets near you and connect directly with the people that sell there.
The most exciting part of their mission is to eliminate the hurdles faced by people on food assistance in purchasing locally-sourced fresh and healthy food. Of the $100B appropriated to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) this year, only about $200M will be spent at farmers markets. Too much of SNAP dollars are spent at convenience stores on less healthy processed food.
Part of that issue - aside from true “food deserts”, is that less than half of the 8,600 farmers markets in the US accept SNAP payments, and the ones that do use a cumbersome and inefficient process that is difficult for the customer, the vendor, and the market manager. Soko has modernized the process of accepting SNAP payments, making them easier and just as fast as credit card payments (watch this short video).
They have recently launched a crowdfunding campaign to help get Soko into more farmers markets so that more people will be able to consume healthy food - and local farmers will receive additional customers and support.
You can jump in and support the cause with an investment as little as $100. Don’t wait because their Wefunder campaign will be ending soon!
